Office romance runs on the gap between two registers. All day these two speak in the flattened language of work (per my last email, circling back, happy to discuss) while conducting an entirely different conversation underneath it. The trope is the pleasure of watching the second conversation win.
The boss version sharpens it with stakes that are structural rather than invented. Somebody has more power, both of them know it, and the good version makes the person with the power be the one who is careful. Restraint is the register the reader is actually here for; the meeting room is just where it gets tested.
Couples who met at work already know the whole choreography: which of you was careful, what the tell was, the coworker who knew before either of you said anything. The interview asks for exactly that, and the chapter gives it back with the fluorescent lighting swapped for something better.
