Grumpy sunshine gets misread as a personality-clash trope, and it is not. It is a permission trope. The grump is not miserable; the grump is guarded, and the sunshine is not naive; the sunshine has decided to be warm on purpose. The story is about one person being granted an exemption from the other one’s defences, and knowing exactly what the exemption is worth.
The mistake is writing the grump as cruel and the sunshine as oblivious, which turns the trope into an apology tour. The good version keeps both of them competent: the grump is soft in precise, deniable ways (the coffee that appears, the errand that gets quietly done), and the sunshine notices every single one and says nothing.
Most couples already know which of you is which, and that is why the trope lands harder written about you. The real material is your version of the exemption: the nickname nobody else may use, the thing one of you tolerates only from the other. A stranger has to invent those. You just have to admit them.
