Royal romance, written about you

Royal romance works because it is the purest form of the forbidden. Most romances have to invent a reason two people cannot be together; this one has a constitution. A prince is a man whose life has been scheduled since birth, whose every companion is vetted, and whose feelings are, technically, a matter of state. Into that walks somebody who was not on the list. The reader knows how the institution will react before he does, and the pleasure is watching him find out. The appeal is not the tiara, though nobody minds the tiara. It is watching a person who has never once been allowed to want something for himself decide that this time the institution can wait, and finding out, page by page, exactly what that decision costs.

The mistake is a palace with no rules, where the crown is a costume and the protocol evaporates the moment it becomes inconvenient. The good version makes the machinery real: the private secretary with the diary, the photograph that cannot be taken, the engagement that has already been half arranged, the family who are polite to her in a way that means no. Then it spends its length on the small rebellions (the walk with no security detail, the kitchen at midnight, the first time he introduces her by her name alone) and lets the reader feel the weight of a life where an unplanned afternoon is the most romantic thing a man can offer. The romance is measured in what he gives up to have it, which is why the small things carry so much: a phone call taken in person, a dinner with nobody standing behind his chair.

Written about a real couple, one of you gets the title and the other gets the scandal, and the story keeps whatever is actually true about you: which of you is more careful in public, the family member who needed winning over, the private signal that means get me out of this room. Every couple has a version of protocol, a set of unwritten rules about how they behave when other people are watching, and this is the trope that makes those rules literal. The trope is at bottom about being chosen over a whole world of obligations, and a stranger would write that in the abstract. You know the specific obligation one of you actually set aside, and the specific person who was not pleased about it, and that is the chapter.
