Dark romance, written about you

Dark romance is the genre with the safety rails visibly removed, and that is the whole draw. Every romance runs on wanting; this one runs on being wanted past the point of politeness, by somebody who does not ask nicely and does not pretend otherwise. The appeal is not cruelty, whatever the covers suggest. It is intensity without apology: a person whose attention is total, whose claim is absolute, and whose version of devotion would frighten anyone standing outside it. Readers come for the feeling of being the single exception to a very hard man, and for a story honest enough to admit how much of desire is about being pursued, and how good it feels to be the one thing somebody dangerous cannot walk away from.

The mistake most versions make is confusing dark with mean. A hero who is simply unpleasant is not dangerous, he is tedious, and a heroine who only suffers is not a lead, she is scenery. The good version keeps the danger pointed outward and the obsession pointed at her, and it spends its length on the slow negotiation of terms: what he will not do, what she will not give, and the moments when each of them discovers the other has a line after all. It also keeps her formidable. She is not rescued from the dark. She walks into it on purpose, with her eyes open, and finds that she likes the view, and the reader gets to watch the most frightening man in the story slowly realize that he is the one who has been caught.

Written about a real couple, the trope stops being about a stranger’s menace and becomes a heightened portrait of a dynamic you already have. Every pair has one who is possessive in small deniable ways and one who secretly enjoys it: the hand at the small of the back in a crowded room, the text that says where are you and means come home, the way one of you goes very still when the other is flirted with at a party. Those go into the interview and come back with the volume turned all the way up. You also set the heat and the hard limits yourself, and the limits hold no matter how dark the world you picked. That is what makes the dark part safe to enjoy: the menace is fiction, the man is yours, and the rules are the ones you wrote.
