Mafia romance is the genre’s bluntest instrument, and readers love it for exactly that. It takes the quality every romance hero needs (devotion with consequences) and makes it literal: a man whose word reorganizes rooms, whose protection is a physical fact, and whose enemies’ problem is now that he has something to lose.
The craft is in the aim. The danger points outward, always; the version where it turns on her is a different and worse book. What the good version understands is that the appeal is safety wearing danger’s clothes: the most frightening man in the city is, to one person only, the safest place in it.
